Who Is Sushil Saluja?

Growing up in East London

I have lived and worked most of my life in London, where I live with my wife Seema.  I am passionate about the City.  I grew up in east London, attending the local comprehensive, then moving to Hull for my father’s work as an academic.  I joined British Rail as an engineering apprentice in Derby, before studying engineering at Cambridge University.

Building my professional career in the City

After University, I joined Accenture where I worked in over 40 countries, in financial services and technology-led change.  I was lucky to be mentored by some great people early in my career.  My achievements include creating the first internet bank for the UK (Egg) in the late 1990’s and leading the Accenture team to integrate Lloyds and Halifax banks. My work was focused on helping large institutions adapt to change and transform themselves.  I retired in 2020 after some 32 years, to start a portfolio career.

Understanding different nations and cultures, learning how we work together to drive social and economic progress is part of what makes us successful as a global City.

In 2009, I worked with the City of London to help set up TheCityUK, helping the financial services industry recover after the financial crisis and have remained heavily involved.

For two years before retirement, I ran our small family business in education, working with the Malaysian Government and UK universities to help 350 students a year study in the UK.

Public service and supporting charities

My love of the arts and belief in education for all led me to become a Trustee of the British Council, and to join the Board of the University of Greenwich.  These roles build upon previous charity work such as helping set up the UK College of Teaching, being a Trustee of the Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI) and increasing apprenticeships in London.  For several years, I have sponsored a guide dog for the blind and I am a Friend of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

I am currently Chair of the charity Heart of the City, helping small businesses get to carbon net zero.  For the past 2 years, I have worked with the elected Members of Castle Baynard as Chair of the Business Forum.

Alongside my charitable activities, I have been the head of Technology at a major City institution and am in the process of setting up a charity to help budding young artists establish themselves.  I have been active in Castle Baynard as Chair of the Business Forum for the past two years.
